St John makes a difference in the medical field by providing first aid training and eye care support for people in need. They are offering free eye tests for people until the end of June 2025.
The St John Eye Centres around South Africa are giving people in need the opportunity to access free eye tests at their centres and then, if needed, supply affordable eye care to further support those in need.
Eye care can be very expensive and out of reach for those who need it most. St John has run its eye care centres throughout South Africa as a way to assist people in accessing adequate medical care. The centres are based in Durban, Chris Hani Baragwanath, Braamfontein, Bloemfontein, Woodstock and Fish Hoek, Cape Town, Somerset West, East London and Gqeberha.
The goal at St John is to provide impact, with a focus on vulnerable communities in the area of eye care, occupational health training and community development projects.
They are currently running a promotion for free eye-tests at each of their centres. All one needs to do is make an appointment and have the promotional poster shared below as evidence for the discount.
Going Above and Beyond for Community
In 2024, St John was thrilled to partner with Woza Moya in Hillcrest on the outskirts of Durban.
The Woza Moya project consists of approximately 180 crafters, mostly women, who earn a modest regular income by making crafts. In many instances, these women are the sole breadwinners in their families. Very often, their connection with Woza Moya is because they have family members living with HIV/ AIDS at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre.
Many of these women were approaching the stage in their lives when their eyesight is deteriorating – especially when doing long hours of detailed beadwork and craft making.
Restoring optimal sight to the crafters in need was life-changing for them, for their families and for their community. It allowed them to work comfortably, continue to make world-class art and craft products, and continue to bring wages into their homes.
The organisation offers various medical support so if you would like to find out more, you can do so via the website or Facebook.
