Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Every Conversation Counts

September marks National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in South Africa, with World Suicide Prevention Day observed annually on 10 September. This important month serves as a reminder that every life matters, every voice deserves to be heard, and every conversation has the potential to make a difference.

This year’s global theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages people around the world to “Start the Conversation.” The message is simple but powerful: by talking openly about mental health, we can reduce stigma, encourage understanding, and create environments where people feel safe to seek help.

In South Africa, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is leading its awareness campaign with the theme “Every Conversation Counts.” The campaign reminds us that we don’t need to have all the answers to support someone who may be struggling. Sometimes, simply listening without judgment, showing compassion, and checking in with a friend, family member, or colleague can have a lasting impact.

Suicide remains a significant public health concern in South Africa. According to SADAG, an estimated 23 people die by suicide every day, while many more attempt to take their own lives. Men are particularly affected, being nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women. These statistics highlight the importance of increasing awareness, encouraging early intervention, and ensuring that support is accessible to everyone who needs it.

While mental health challenges can affect anyone, it is important to remember that help is available and recovery is possible. By fostering open conversations, promoting empathy, and creating supportive communities, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage more people to reach out before they reach a crisis point.

If you or someone you know is struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or experiencing thoughts of suicide, please know that you are not alone. Free, confidential support is available 24 hours a day.

This September, let’s make a commitment to be kinder, to listen more, and to remind those around us that they are valued. A simple conversation, a compassionate question, or a moment of genuine connection could change — or even save — a life.

Every conversation counts. Together, we can create hope and make a difference. 💛
