As Cape Town experiences the coldest weeks of winter, many of us have the comfort of warm homes, hot meals and cosy blankets. For those living on the streets, however, this is the most difficult and dangerous time of the year. Bitter temperatures, relentless rain and icy winds make every day a struggle. That’s why The Secret Love Project is once again calling on the community to help bring warmth, dignity and hope to those who need it most.
Last year, Cape Town showed just how powerful a community can be when people come together for a meaningful cause. The inaugural Love Challenge raised an incredible R209,000, enabling the project to provide 839 brand-new waterproof rainsuits to people experiencing homelessness. Each rainsuit offered more than protection from the elements—it gave someone the chance to stay warm, dry and face the winter with renewed hope.
This year, the challenge is back, and getting involved couldn’t be easier. Anyone can create their own fitness or endurance challenge through GivenGain and use it to raise funds for the initiative. Whether you choose to run, cycle, swim, hike, walk or even complete a personal fitness goal, your efforts can make a real difference. Every R350 raised provides one brand-new rainsuit for someone living on the streets.
People across the city are already transforming their personal goals into opportunities to give back. Some are running their first 10km, others are cycling long distances, committing to daily walks or challenging themselves to new fitness milestones—all while encouraging friends, family and colleagues to sponsor their efforts. Every kilometre completed and every donation received helps put another rainsuit into the hands of someone facing Cape Town’s harsh winter conditions.
With just seven days remaining before the Love Challenge comes to an end, there is still time to make an impact. If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, now is the perfect opportunity. Set yourself a challenge, rally your supporters and help spread warmth where it’s needed most.
If taking on a physical challenge isn’t for you, you can still make a meaningful contribution by donating directly to the project. Every donation—no matter the amount—helps provide another person with protection from the cold and rain. Together, we can ensure that more people experience kindness, compassion and comfort this winter.
